What is the process of a sand blasting machine?

Sep 09, 2022 Sand Blasting

Sand blasting Machine is also known as an abrasive blasting machine. Basically, it is the operation of forcibly moving a stream of abrasive material against a surface. The sand blasting operation is done under high pressure to smooth a rough surface, roughen a smooth and Shape the surface to remove its contaminants. There are several variants of sand blasting machine processes like bead blasting, Soda blasting, and shot blasting.

Before sand blasting, it is mandatory to know about its materials and the pros and cons. If your job profile is related to sand blasting or you owned a company that involved in the same process, you need to stay with us. In this article, we will discuss sand blasting machine materials and their pros and cons.

sand blasting cleaning is a process that is generally used in a variety of different industries for many different purposes. Abrasive blasting is a process in which an abrasive media is stimulated through a sand blasting nozzle by means of compressed air. The abrasive media used differs based on the surface treatment required.

There are Two Types of Sand blasting Processes:

  • Water-Driven:- It is applied for decreasing surface deterioration and it is the most common process which is used for brick or concrete surfaces preparation.
  • Air-Driven:-  This process is best suited for metal surfaces, to prevent moisture buildup and avoid water intrusion on the surface. Sand blasting is the process of propelling abrasive by using the pressurized liquid or compressed gas as a propellant. There are many general terms for this process that is usually related to the sand blasting abrasive media used for this process.

Sand Blasting Abrasive Materials:

Materials that can be Sand blasted:

  • Glass
  • Stone
  • Metals
  • Wood
  • Plastics Steel
  • Brass
  • Aluminum
  • Silver

Materials Required for Sand blasting Machine Process:

  • Abrasive Media –grit size 80 grit around 0.007
  • Sand –Produces free silica: cause of silicosis, a lung disease
  • Aluminum Oxide – Lasts 30-40 X over-sand.
  • Silicon Carbide – Lasts at least 40-50X over-sand.
  • Garnet
  • Glass Beads
  • Black Magic
  • Walnut Shells
  • Plastic Pellets

The range of uses for Sand blasting are very broad and include:

  • surface preparation preceding painting, bonding, or other coating operations
  • removal of rust, scale, sand, or paint from manufactured elements
  • roughening of industrial gas turbine engine element surfaces in preparation for thermal spray coating
  • removal of burrs or list profiling machined components
  • providing a matte cosmetic surface coating on consumer products
  • removal of mold flash from plastic components
  • surface texturing of tooling, and molds to alter the appearance of molded or stamped products
